Subhash Chandra Bose or Netaji who is also known as Netaji to us Indians was born on the 23rd of January,1897 in the city of Cuttack. He was a great national patriot and a hero who was also one of the greatest leaders of India. He sacrificed his life for his motherland, for his dream was to free his motherland from foreign rule. So to achieve his dream for his motherland he joined the freedom movement in India.

He was born to Janakinath Bose, who was a famous lawyer and to Prabhabati Devi. He came from a very well-to-do family and was great as a child and showed signs of future greatness too. He was also a brilliant boy at school but there was this one time when he had beaten a European professor at his school for which he was thrown out of the school.

He has passed the Matriculation Exam from Cuttack and then he joined the Presidency College in Kolkata. He then completed his Bachelors of Arts degree from another college and went to England and took the tripos degree from Cambridge University. He also had passed the I.C.S exam but he was not interested in becoming a high ranked official and wanted to pursue his dream of freeing his motherland from the hands of a foreign rule and wanted to serve his country, so he rejected to service under the British Government and resigned from I.C.S.

He then went ahead and participated in the freedom movement by joining the All India Congress Party and was soon also elected to be the president of the party. But he gave up his presidency due to differences in opinion in important matters with Gandhiji. He then formed a new party inside the congress party known as the Forward Bloc of the Congress and became its president. He was often imprisoned and due to his deteriorating health because of a hunger strike, he was placed under house arrest.

Netaji then escaped from India in disguise during the Second World War and he went to Russia and Germany to ask for help. Hitler has received him warmly and promised to help him and gave Netaji military training and made him a general. During his time in Germany, Netaji raised the Indian National Army by training and enrolling the Indian prisoners of war and the newly formed army called Subhas Chandra Bose ‘Netaji’ and since then this name has stuck. He also travelled to Japan to be nearer to India and there also he raised an army and also Indians from the Far East joined his army. The morale and discipline of the army were excellent.

With his army, he started advancing towards India and he attacked India from the Assamese side. He got a little success in the beginning but the German and Japanese powers fell soon and so did his army. He flew back to Japan but the plane crashed on the way and he died. Even though Netaji is no more in this world his name and legacy lives on and will shine forever. He will always be regarded as the greatest martyr of the country and his this saying will always be famous – “Give me your blood and I will give you Freedom”.
