Durga Puja is performed during the autumn season every year. For the Hindus, it a very important and the greatest festival of their lives. The Puja is held for 10 consecutive days but the last 4 are the most important ones – Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami. It is on Dashami the 10th day on which the idols of the gods and goddesses are immersed in water bodies such as ponds, lakes and rivers. The idol of Maa Durga is also worshipped along with her children, i.e., Ganesh, Lakshmi, Saraswati and Karthikeya. The frame on which the idols are attached is known as the Chall-Chitra. The entire frame of the gods and goddesses is placed upon a raised platform made up of wooden planks. The pandals are decorated beautifully with wonderful illumination and every evening aarti performed by the priest.
Mother Goddess Durga is considered as the most powerful goddess who is also the bestower of strength, prosperity and all the best gifts in life. SO the devotees pray to her for their various boons. She also killed the demon king Mahishasura who has been troubling the gods and goddesses and had occupied Indra’s throne in heaven. So the gods and goddesses also worship the great goddesses Durga. For defeating the demon king he also carries the name of Mahishasura Mardini. The legend is incorporated in Sri Sri Chandi, a chapter in the Markandeya Purana composed by the great sage Markandeya. The last day, i.e., Vijaya Dashami timing can be found over here.
