Durga Puja is the greatest festival of Bengali people and it is performed every year during the autumn season. For followers of the Hindu religion, this is their greatest festival along with Kali Puja or Diwali. Goddess Durga is the symbol of power, strength and of victory of good over evil. In this festival Goddess Durga and her children Karthik, Ganesha, Lakshmi and Saraswati are worshipped. The festival stretches for a total of 10 days but the main days for crowd attraction are the last four days, i.e, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami, and the Dashami. Dussehra is also celebrated on Dashami. On the 10th day, i.e., Dashami the idol of the gods and goddesses are immersed in a water body such as a pool or the river Ganges.
Mahalaya is the first day of this 10-day festival. Durga Puja is a festival of the Goddess Durga’s homecoming on Earth along with her children, every year. Bengalees start their early morning by playing the Mahishashur Mardini song or simply Mahalaya, which has been famous for ages was sung by Birendra Krishna Bhadra.
