Durga Puja also is known as Durga Utsav or Navratri is a huge Hindu festival or a typical Bengali Festival in India(primarily West Bengal) that is based mainly on the goddess Durga. It is held in the Hindu month of Ashwin as in the Hindu calendar. This year the Durga Puja 2018 is going to be held in the month of Ashwin according to the Hindi Calendar and in the month of October according to the Gregorian Calendar. It is a multi-day festival which is accompanied by a lot of celebrations and pandal hopping all day and night long. Durga Puja is also celebrated in the countries of Bangladesh and Nepal majorly and also scarcely in other foreign countries like the United States Of America, the United Kingdom, Russia and many other countries all around the world.
The primary goddess during the puja days is the goddess Durga. The puja marks the battle between goddess Durga and the devil evil Mahishasura and the goddess Durga’s emerging victories against the devil. This major Pujo signifies the victory of the Good over Evil,i.e, the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura. The festival is a very old tradition of the Hindus and the existence date is very unclear and there are many theories behind it but there are no clear theories about it. The Durga Puja is also considered as the greatest festival of the Bengalees and they consider it as their most sacred and holy festival. The Durga Puja festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil. This Durga Puja festival is so big that all schools, colleges, and courts remain closed for over a month during this time. Durga is known for many kinds of names such as Durga Mata or Maa Durga. She is the primary goddess and is followed by Saraswati, Lakshmi, Ganesha, and Karthik. All these four of them are goddess Durga’s children. Shiva, goddess Durga’s husband is also revered during this holy festival. Many people go abroad for tours during these holidays, while those to stay away from home come back to enjoy with their friends, family, and relatives. Also, a very good thing that happens during this festival that is all people forget about their differences like Hindus, Muslims, and Christians or the poor and the rich completely forget about their differences and come forward and enjoy this festival. This is the most important significance of this festival.

Durga Puja in Kolkata or Durga Puja Kolkata is very much highly celebrated and very much enjoyed by all citizens all over the city and the state of West Bengal. The Kolkata Durga Puja is a very big and much highly celebrated festival in the whole country. During this great Indian Festival. all the Hindus buy new clothes for their near and dear ones. They want to forget their past differences and with their rivals or enemies and start afresh completely a new life. Thousands of men, women, and children get out of their homes dressed in their best dresses and go to see the pandals and the deity models which are very beautifully decorated. Our Mother Goddess Durga is considered as the most powerful goddess who is the bestower of strength, prosperity and all the best gifts in life. So the devotees pray to her for her various boons. She killed the demon king Mahishasura who had been troubling the gods and goddesses and occupied Indra’s throne in heaven. So the gods and goddesses also worship the great goddess Durga. She is also known as Mahisasuramardini. The legend is incorporated in Sri Sri Chandi, a chapter in the Markandeya Purana composed by the sage Markandeya.
